THE PROMPT:

It's unlikely the world will return to some late-20th century paradigm. Millennials and younger have lived with one foot in the digital world for years now, while matriculating generations (Alpha and Z) know only a hybrid virtual and IRL existence, and yes, in that order of primacy. Attention takes discipline, and it doesn't seem like solutions beyond corporal punishment have been successful in retaining it. Millennials, the last widespread generation to be raised by parents who were liberal with the rod, so to speak, have overcorrected so thoroughly, that their kids walk all over them, lack discipline, and cannot be bothered to hunker down and focus. Like many things across American society especially, the middle ground has all but vanished.
